Sultan River Watershed

This watershed covers 70 square miles.


The drinking water for 80 percent of Snohomish County comes from this watershed located east of Sultan in the Cascade Mountain Range. The watershed consists of 1,780 acreas of pristine forest land managed by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD). The Sultan Basin is one of the wettest watersheds on the west slope of the Cascades. Average precipitation is 185 inches a year, five times more than the City of Everett.

Activity in the watershed surrounding the reservoir is restricted to daytime-use only. No overnight camping is allowed on the reservoir. The watershed is patrolled daily, and the gates close at sunset every night.
